    How the RICE score works

RICE score = (Reach x Impact x Confidence) / Effort. A higher score means more value for the work involved.

Reach is how many people or events are affected in a set period, for example customers per quarter. Impact is how much each one is affected: 3 for massive, 2 for high, 1 for medium, 0.5 for low and 0.25 for minimal.

Confidence is how sure you are of those numbers: 100% with solid data, 80% with some, 50% for a guess. Effort is the total work in person-months.

    Getting useful scores

Use the same period for every item's reach, and estimate effort for the whole team, not one role. The scores are for comparing items with each other, so consistency matters more than precision.

Treat the ranking as the start of the conversation. Dependencies, deadlines and strategy can still move an item up or down.

    Questions

What is a good RICE score?
There is no absolute scale. A score only means something next to the other items scored the same way.
    What unit is effort in?
Person-months: two people for three months is 6. Use whole or half numbers and do not go lower than 0.5.
